Gandhi
Gandhi. When we here the name, we often think of the little man in the white cloth who fought for peace. However, unlike most fighters of the peace, Gandhi fought with what he was fighting for. He did not strike back, nor combat when provoked. He remained level-headed and calm. Even though many people could not fathom how he did this, I believe this quote shines light upon Gandhi's ways "When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Always." No matter how bleak things looked, Gandhi never gave up hope. He possessed the wonderful insight that many people seem to lack; that there is always a tomorrow and nothing terrible can last forever.
When Gandhi first began his career as a lawyer in South Africa, he was constantly frowned upon by others for being a "colored" lawyer. However, instead of fighting back, Gandhi simply let it go. This trait would follow him for the rest of his life. After being kicked out of first class for being a person of color, Gandhi decided something needed to be done. So he tried out his leadership skills by holding the Indian Congress Party of South Africa, where he tries to get equal rights for Indians. Even after the British soldiers pounce on him and his people, he does not resist. This is just one example of Gandhi following his rules. Not only is it the right thing to do, because and eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, it is also a smart thing to do. When you don't hurt people hurting you, they have nothing against you. No matter what, you will look like the bad guy for shooting down a bunch of people peacefully resisting and not shooting back. There is no way to twist that to make it look good, and Gandhi knew this. So, being the crafty man he was, he took advantage of this and built a legacy around it.
Many people tried to bring Gandhi down, but he was steadfast and far more knowledgeable than the naysayers. He knew that no matter what, that good with prevail Evil is simply temporary. I only wish that more people could know this and use it in their daily lives. Gandhi was and is an inspiration to all in how he just never gave up. From giant massacres to a human wall getting torn down one by one, he just kept on going.

Pop Culture
The item I decided to do my pop culture universe on is religious music in India and in America. In India, some of the older generations don't like the new religious music, and believe it to be sacrilege. There are issues in America as well. I did my research on mainly Christian music, seeing as it it much more prevalent in me and my peers lives. According to the article, some radio stations refuse to play Christian artists music simply because of the Christian influence. However, in India and America, religious music is starting to become far more popular and mainstream than in earlier generations. Younger people in both countries are starting to listen to it more. In the U.S, Christian music is being downloaded on iTunes like crazy, and far more young people in India are truly getting into the music.

NGO in India
The Akshaya Trust is a "is committed to helping the helpless, homeless, sick, elderly, mentally ill
and destitute in Madurai, India by providing healthy food, care, and opportunity
to rehabilitate in order to restore human dignity." They hold no discrimination against ethnicity nor religious affiliation. They mainly help with the mentally disabled and senior citizens who live on the street. However, they are not just restricted to these people; they also help with rape and violence victims, all homeless, and the helpless. In fact, their slogan is "Helping the Helpless." They provide them with much needed food, clothing, and shelter among other necessities.
The Akshaya Trust will be opening up a much anticipated shelter on May 9th, 2013, in Madurai, India. This shelter will be 9 blocks from the founder of the Akshaya Trust, Narayanan Krishnan. The people have been waiting for this shelter since around 2002, and it is sure to help many troubled and hopeless people in the area. The foundation also cooks three meals a day for the people of Madurai. However, these are no frozen-then-heated-up meals. These are hand prepared each day, and the ingredients are hand picked as well. The staff is minimal, the equipment leaves something to be lacking as does the time, but they do it everyday. I really admire this foundation, and enjoyed learning about these great human beings.
